Côtes du Roussillon Wine

The appellation of Côtes du Roussillon covers the region south of Corbières (and Perpignan) down to the Spanish border. This is the sunniest region in France and therefore, perhaps unsurprisingly, the emphasis is on producing mid-weight, spicy wines with a generosity of southern fruit.

Denis Ferrer and Bruno Ribière exemplify a generation of pioneering winemakers who recognised the potential of the Roussillon's neglected vineyards. They had the confidence and competence to start an operation from scratch in the mid-1990s. We can remember visiting their Domaine Ferrer-Ribière in Terrats (12 kilometres southwest of Perpignan) in the early days when they had wine in vats and barrels but hadn't finished putting the roof on the winery. Today they preside over 44 hectares of vineyard, all organically certified and furnishing an excellent range of really characterful wines. Denis and Bruno produce an excellent Côtes du Roussillon 'Tradition', made from equal parts of Carignan, Grenache Noir and Syrah that combine to give a mid-weight, versatile red with lots of dark garrigue fruit and spicy undertones. It drinks well from release and will readily support 3-5 years bottle age.

We are delighted to receive an allocation of Ron Laughton and Michel Chapoutier's joint venture 'Agly Brothers' Côtes du Roussillon from a parcel of antique rootstock near the village of Latour de France. It is named after the neighbouring river Agly and is blended from 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache that are fullyde-stemmed prior to an 18 month cuvaison in concrete vats. The recently released 2015 vintage has been warmly reviewed by Jeb Dunnuck in the Wine Advocate who observed: "It's a sensational 2015 that offers notes of blackcurrants, blackberries, chocolate, licorice and roasted herbs. Rich, full-bodied, unctuous and downright sexy, with moderate acidity and building tannin, drink this powerhouse beauty anytime over the coming 5-7 years or more."
