Lying on the Eastern bank of the Southern Rhône below the imposing edifice of the Dentelles de Montmirail the sun-kissed vineyards of Rasteau have long been recognised as being a sweet spot for yielding wines of power, value and concentration. A former Côtes-du-Rhône Villages appellation, Rasteau was elevated to full cru status in 2010.
Jean-Pierre Meffre at Domaine Saint Gayan produces characterful wines from mature rootstock. His excellent Rasteau is made from a blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah. It has an intense purple robe, alluring aromas of wild herbs and berries and palate of dark autumnal fruit with warming peppery undertones.
