ChampagneGilles Dumangin, who is based in the village of Chigny-les-Roses on the Montagne de Reims, typifies a new generation of récoltants-manipulants; producers who make their own wine from their own grapes, aka 'Grower Champagne'. He has, through rigorous vineyard techniques and cellar management, garnered an international following for his expertlyassembled and characterful wines. He has been blending and bottling our popular own label 'Champagne Yapp' since the Millennium and our sales have increased year-on-year. It is made from a blend of 50% Pinot Meunier and 25% each of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, yielding a wine that is light, fresh, fruity and extremely versatile. A second 'Extra Brut' cuvée is made from exactly the same cépagement but has a minimal dosage of just two grams of sugar per litre of wine. It has attractive citrus scents and a whistle-clean, bone-dry palate with a long, elegant finish. It makes a terrific aperitif or accompaniment to shellfish. A superb rosé is blended from 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier and has a delightful coral-pink robe and delicate crushed-berry scents and flavours and a fine, fresh, dry finish. Gilles only produces vintage Champagne when he feels that he can do so without depriving his other bottlings of quality reserve wine and he refuses to release it until he believes it is readily approachable. Made from equal volumes of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it has an alluring brioche and stewed apple bouquet and a rich, complex palate of orchard fruit and minerals.
