Côte de Beaune Wine

After the cruelly frost-depleted 2016 vintage the wine-makers of the Côtes de Beaune were blessed with a vintage of good quality and quantity in 2017. Vine growth was so prolific that crop-thinning was required on many vineyards but seasoned wine-makers are attesting to a vintage of great terroir and typicality where individual sites characteristics are fully expressed. 'Mother Nature sent back the lift' according to one and early samplings have shown very accessible, fruit-accentuated wines that should give great pleasure in their youth and with considerable bottle age.

Based in the village of Chorey-les-Beaune, Domaine François Gay et Fils extends over 8 hectares of vineyard with plots in prime appellations. Current patron Pascal Gay took over the reins here in 2003 and prides himself on producing traditional wines by traditional methods. His excellent white Pernand-Vergelesses has a wealth of bright orchard fruit scents and flavours plus a long, elegant finish. It makes a fine foil to local dishes such as jambon en persillade or snails with garlic butter. His red Aloxe-Corton has subtle 'forest floor' aromas and a mid-weight red fruit palate supported by supple tannins. His bottling of red Beaune, from the Premier Cru 'Les Teurons' climat is similarly 'Old School' but has a greater concentration of darker fruit and sufficient grip to support 5-10 years' bottle age.

Longvic-based Stéphane Brocard is one of the best négociants in Burgundy and we have been benefitting from his intimate knowledge of the backwaters and byways over the last decade. His powerful red 'Rue au Port' Pommard has a bouquet of violets and hedgerow berries preceding a palate of rich, dark fruit and peppery tannins. It can be drunk in its youth (if decanted) but is really best cellared for 7-10+ years to reveal its' full potential.
