Ron Laughton's longstanding friendship with Michel Chapoutier has spawned a joint venture vineyard planted with a mixture of Heatcote Shiraz and Hermitage Syrah in 1998. The resultant wine is called 'La Pleiade', named after the constellation visible from both hemispheres. It has the signature depth of dark, Heathcote fruit but a discernible French accent with plum and damson flavours and a palate-cleansing acidity.

The excellent 2012 vintage displays the depth, concentration and intensity of the distinctive iron-rich New World terroir coupled with an underlying 'European' minerality. Only 400 cases are produced.

"This illustrious partnership between Michel Chapoutier from France's Rhone region and Ron Laughton of the Heathcote estate, Jasper Hill was founded in 1997 and the project yielded its first vintage in 2003. Formerly called "Cambrian," "Cluster M45" is now the U.S. label for this wine, known as "La Pleiade" elsewhere. It is made from 100% Shiraz from a 20-acre single vineyard just south of Jasper Hill's Georgia's Paddock, which is planted with a 50/50 mix of vines taken from Jasper Hill and Chapoutier's vineyards (imported from France)."

Vinification A new vineyard of 'Australian Shiraz' selected by Ron and imported 'French Syrah' selected by Michel, was planted on virgin red Cambrian soil in Heathcote during the spring of 1998. This is a superb example of a blending of Australian and French cultures as well as winemaking from tightly spaced, dry-farmed vineyards that have achieved great ripeness and intensity in the Cambrian soils of this region.

Jasper Hill (Ron & Elva Laughton)

In 1975, former food scientist Ron Laughton and his wife Elva created their Jasper Hill estate in Heathcote, Victoria (70 miles north of Melbourne), drawn by the region’s distinctive geology, namely an iron-rich seam of Cambrian clay on which the vineyards are strategically located. Today the Laughton’s world-renowned, bio-dynamically farmed, 20-hectare estate is widely regarded as being some of the finest terroir in Australia.

Jasper Hill produces six wines from three individual vineyards. While the single estate 'Emily’s Paddock' Shiraz / Cabernet Franc and 'Georgia’s Paddock' Shiraz (first vintage 1982) are the best known wines, Jasper Hill also makes a 'Georgia’s Paddock' Semillon, 'Georgia’s Paddock' Riesling (first vintage 1984) and 'Georgia’s Paddock' Nebbiolo. Cornella Grenache is a recent addition to the Jasper Hill portfolio.

Ron and Elva are today assisted by their daughter, Emily, who makes the 'Occam’s Razor' Shiraz in her own right, and the family are also involved in a joint venture with fellow organic enthusiast Michel Chapoutier, which yields the ‘La Pleiade’ Shiraz.
