IGP Vin de Pays de l'Hérault: Domaine de La Grange des Pères 2016

The Grange des Pères rouge has a deep garnet robe and a bouquet of wild garrigue herbs and berries preceding a palate of sweet, dark Autumnal fruit with savoury undertones of tapenade, game and black pepper supported by a framework of ripe tannins.
It is already remarkably approachable but will age well for 10-15+ years.

Tasting Notes
This now famed estate was created from scratch by Laurent Vaillé on 10 hectares of south-facing limestone soils on the edge of the Terrasses de Larzac in 1989. The sheer quality of the wines saw them rise to cult status in France within a decade and La Grange des Pères is now firmly established as 'One of the icon estates in the Languedoc', (The Wine Advocate).

Domaine de La Grange des Pères

Having trained under top producers Gérard Chave (Hermitage), Jean-François Coche-Dury (Côte d’Or) and Éloi Dürrbach (Trévallon), Laurent Vaillé bought his own land near Aniane in the Hérault valley in the late 1980s. The high-altitude vineyards had to be created with the help of dynamite and bulldozers and yields today are still eye-wateringly low. Like neighbour Mas de Daumas Gassac, his wines are bottled under a lowly Vin de Pays classification which belie their outstanding quality.
