Hot Offer: Hermitage 'Farconnet' Jean-Louis Chave Sélection 2014
"Has the stature and power of Hermitage, if not the full complexity - but that may well come. 17/20. Drink 2020-2034."
Richard Hemming MW, jancisrobinson.com
Anyone looking for a window on the iconic appellation of Hermitage or the Chave wine-making dynasty, should snaffle some bottles of the 'Farconnet' 2014 in this limited availability offer (saving £5 per bottle). Chave's 'Sélection' wines include some bought-in grapes (although increasingly he uses the younger 'domaine' vines) and they receive the full Chave level of meticulous quality control.
'Farconnet' (named after a lord who sold the family their first parcel of Hermitage) is pure Syrah from three lieux-dits on the hill - Les Diognières, Les Greffieux and Péléat - 80% of which is de-stemmed prior to vinification. 20% of the wine is matured in new oak, the rest in old barriques for 24 months prior to release. Only 400 cases were produced. The wine is drinking well now, yet could be cellared for a decade.
"Savvy Rhône fans whose tendency is to drink reds on the young side will find plenty to like in 2014, a vintage that bears comparison, stylistically, to 2012 and 2006 in the opinion of many of the producers that I visited."
