Robin and Jason Yapp

When Robin and Judith Yapp officially retired back in 2004 (unofficially they still help out on a regular basis) they bought a property in the Gard, the better to explore La France Profonde. Not surprisingly they took a keen interest in the local wine and were intrigued to discover the little-known Duché d'Uzès Wine. There are only a handful of independent wine-makers operating in this enclave between Alès and Nîmes and it didn't take them long to track down Lionel Pourquier at Domaine Camp Galhan. Happily they procured a few bottles for us to sample en famille and we duly visited Lionel at his base in Ribauté-les-Tavernes and managed to secure an allocation.

Lionel's toothsome, red Vin de Pays Duché d'Uzès: Domaine Camp Galhan 'Les Pérassières' 2013 and is made from roughly equal proportions of Grenache Noir and Syrah vinified in stainless steel vats. It has appealing red fruit and wild herb aromas and a rich, meaty palate with lots of dark berry flavours and earthy undertones.
